Today I had the opportunity to attend a blogging event sponsored by the @ocgoodwill stores in Orange County. The event took place at the Goodwill store in Lake Forest. It was an exciting place to meet since their store recently opened a boutique shop next door to their already standing store. The boutique shop is called Keepers. The 7 bloggers and Goodwill personnel met at the Keepers store to open the festivities. While we were waiting for everyone to arrive, I had the time to look around and check out the merchandise. I cannot express how wonderful their selection was and by the time we were ready to meet at the regular store next door, I already had 3 items in my hand. They have a great selection of designer jeans and their tops were of great quality. I saw a few tops towards the front of the store with their original store tags.
The event opened with everyone intriducing themselves and we were divided into groups of 2 and 3. We were then given 3 tasks to complete. The first task was to find an item in the store and repurpose it to become something else. My group decided to repurpose a tank top and turn it into a handbag. Pattie and I did a great job and our creation won the first contest. The second task was to repurpose an item that would look good in the living room. Our group decided to put together a candle holder and a basket to create a bird feeder that would do well in a living room or in the front patio of a house. We didn't win that category. The group that won created a book shelf with an actual book. It was very creative. The third task we had to complete was to find items that would be great for a pet. Again, we didn't win in this category but we did create an awesome feeding station for pets. We took a basket and turned it upside down and then placed a bin inside of it in order to hold the pet food. On top of the basket, we placed a silver platter and a feeding bowl. That way you could just take the food out of the basket and feed your pet all in the same location. Of all 3 tasks, I think the first and third were my favorite creations.
It was great to have won the first task and our group was given a $15 gift card for winning that part of the contest. We also learned many interesting facts about the @ocgoodwill. For example, the mission of the OC Goodwill is to help people who are facing barriers to get and keep jobs. They place 3 people in jobs every day. The Goodwill is also responsible for saving a lot of items from ending up in a landfill. I can't remember the exact number but it's a lot. Over a million tons.
The last question was to determine the nationality of Goodwill's marketing director just for fun. I ended up guessing she was French and I won. That entitled me to a $50 gift card! I was so excited and although I didn't have time to shop today, I will definitely go back to the Lake Forest location to do my shopping. I cannot stress enough just how great the quality of their clothes was at both stores.
Last but not least, we had lunch together and pizza and soda was served for all of us. I thought it was a great event and I will definitely do my part by shopping at the Goodwill. I hope you do too!
